"I base my fashion sense on what doesn't itch." - Gilda Radner
I went for that bike ride before church, 15 miles, up the hill and back at a moderate pace.
Ouch.
Went to Faith Bible Church. The pastor is a good guy and has lots of what the Greeks called ethos and is now known as cred. He's also a manuscript preacher, meaning he has his sermon typed out, in a three ring notebook, and delivers it pretty much word for word. That typically (and in this case) means a well crafted delivery with precise phrasing. By comparison I typically have a half-page of notes in 16 point type and rarely refer to it - conversational preaching. Nobody ever used the word "crafted" to describe my delivery. One isn't better than another, they're just different.
Came home and put that room back together and did some cleaning.
It seems if one is in the 43-year habit of vegetating on Sunday afternoon that inclination continues. I could have done a lot more - it's there to be done - but just couldn't screw up the energy to do it.
If I can't find a car show or sports event that interests me I'll watch those house shows on HGTV. This afternoon it was Love It or List It. A couple with a house that doesn't suit them and their needs works with this married couple. The wife talks with them about what they want and need in a house and then, with a fixed sum of money, does a renovation to that end. Her husband is a real estate agent and takes the same sum (plus what would be realized from the sale of their present home) to find them something that will match what they want. At the end of the show the couple decides if they love the renovation the wife did or want to list the house and buy what the husband/agent found.
As "reality shows" go it's light and fun with none of the faked conflict so characteristic of that genre. And besides being entertaining it makes me eager to build our tiny house. It doesn't help that the BBC.com site had a story today about the tiny house movement in the U.S. and how it's spreading to Great Briton. The problem there is that codes typically don't allow houses that small.
We're headed back to OR soon. I'll leave in nine days, driving up with a 4x8' U-Haul loaded with tools and work for four days, and then pick up Pam at the Portland airport for some camping at Silver Falls State Park. Then we'll go back to work a few more days on the property. On the 18th Patti Dilworth is going to drive down from Portland along with her husband. We'll meet and talk, and then they'll drive the hour out to the coast for some kayaking.
Patti is a draftswoman I learned about through....it's too long to bother with here. But she works with a firm in Portland that builds tiny homes and does all their drafting work. If everything works out like we hope she'll draw the plans that will get submitted to Lane County when it comes time for us to get a building permit. Her experience with tiny houses coupled with her drafting skills are just what we need. What I've created is a rough version that certainly needs tweaking to make good sense. I'm especially uncertain of what I've got for the bathroom and adjacent laundry/mud room. So I'm eager to meet with her and get her input. And having her see the site will make future conversations more fruitful.
MoHo will serve us just fine, and the renovations we're doing will make it more than livable. But I am eager to have our tiny house done. We've talked about it and visualized it for so long that getting started, even if it's just talking it over with Patti, can't come soon enough.
