"Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever." - Napoleon Bonaparte
Today's BIG news: after almost 24 hours of screaming, fighting, and resisting Eclair's empty stomach won out. At the noon feeding I still had to force open his mouth and push the nipple in, but once he got a taste of that milk he was off and sucking.
Whew!
At some point - and we had to be near it - the lack of nutrition becomes a problem that spirals downward. Now that he's taking in milk he'll do fine. The next step: returning him to the barn. But that won't happen until we see that he's lost all interest in nursing from Sundae. We'll know that by taking him out to the barn every day to watch how he acts. Any signs of going for Sundae's udder means more time in the house with nothing but a bottle.
I know lots of people think we're absolutely crazy (including my mother) but we really like this life, and a goat kid in the house is both challenging and a lot of fun. It's the world God created, full of contact with the realities of nature. Watching goats born, raising them through various challenges, and yes, then enjoying their provision of meat for our table (or chairs in this case) is what God created and intended. Americans are too insulated from the realities of life and death. When the U.S. was primarily an agrarian society we had, IMO, a much healthier life, both physically and psychologically.
Monday morning, following my edits, I ordered a proof copy of Understanding Your Bible from Amazon. It's going to arrive tomorrow from the east coast.
Think about that. From order to printing to shipping to arrival in less than three days.
POD (Print On Demand) is revolutionizing the publishing business.
College sports is a big deal here, in part because the nearest pro team is the Trailblazers (NBA) in Portland. We get more coverage of U of O teams than OSU because the former is here in Eugene and the latter 40 miles up the road in Corvallis.
Women's softball is especially big because U of O has a nationally ranked team. They're in the college world series for something like the fifth year in a row and opening against Arizona State tonight.
Go Beavers!!
The Midgley's guy came today, looked over my work, and pronounced it good. Unfortunately, he can't say yet whether or not my hearth pad is big enough because the existing hole in the ceiling may be in the wrong place for the new stove. That means the one he'll install may have to come further out from the walls than normal, and that would mean a bigger hearth pad than the normal one I made. He's going to do some drawings and call me in a couple of days to let me know.
This is a beautiful car. Just a working man's bit of transportation but a styling groundbreaker in it's day. It was among the first to have smooth sides, not fenders that protruded from the side. For that reason it's called a shoebox Ford. With two days left in the auction this one, in remarkable condition, is at $5,000. I'm guessing it will hit $10k or very close.
Hey, I wrote this last night and then forgot to hit "publish." Sorry.
