"The great question is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with failure." - Laurence J. Peter
It's now 8 a.m. and the first half of the Brazil/Mexico match just ended with no score (surprise). But if you'd asked me a year ago if I would arrange my schedule to watch a soccer match I'd have called you crazy.
Just one more effect of my two weeks in Brazil.
BRAZIL for the win. Into the round of 8, the quarter finals.
Momma goats can only raise two kids without the risk of excessive weight loss from the demands on their body of feeding more than two. Plus, they normally only have two teats so often at least one of the kids gets less than they need to thrive. Hence, a bottle baby (Eclair) when Sundae has three.
Stella only had one, Frenchie, not uncommon for a first-time mom. But that, too, brings a potential problem. If the sole kid only nurses from one teat the other side of the udder can get engorged, and that can turn into mastitis.
So this morning while Stella was eating her a.m. allotment of grain I checked her udder. That feels weird for this city slicker and most goats do NOT like that, but Stella was absolutely placid while I checked. Good news: no noticeable difference between the right side from which we've seen Frenchie nursing and the left side. So I assume both sides are getting drained adequately. I'll keep an eye (and a hand) on it.
It's now almost dinnertime and I feel like I've pretty much wasted the day. We went into town this afternoon to deposit the cash from the sale of the Kia and I got the trim I need for the new window in the living room. Oh, and I washed the very black Blazer. Black paint, black bumpers, black running boards, black-out windows....
I told Pam we should name it Black Watch. (You have to be Scottish.)
Besides an accumulation of dust that shows up most on a black vehicle washing it is the best way to spot any problems. It has one very small paint bubble on the hood but the exterior is otherwise perfect.
It has a power sun roof that we're not sure how to use. Never had one before. If it's a sunny day opening it means the sun is heating the top of your head and making you hot. If it's not a sunny day what do you need a hole in the roof for?
Maybe that's why all cars don't have them.
Madeline Albright, President Clinton's U.N. Ambassador gave an interview in London yesterday in which she said President Trump was our most undemocratic president ever.
What does that mean?
She explained it by noting his attitudes toward a free press and disregard for other institutions.
Huh? Attitudes now make someone undemocratic?
But what floored me is that when asked who would face him in the 2020 elections her response was, "You're assuming he'll be around in 2020."
Whoa!
I got a very nice email from Joe this morning telling me about how well my trip went. I tried to read it to Pam and couldn't get through it without choking up. He ended by saying that when he told the congregation they were already planning to bring me back next year the people clapped and cheered.
That's humbling!
T'ank you, Fadder!
I took Sally for a test drive this afternoon. Having installed a new distributor and a new carb it was NOT a given that she'd run at all, never mind without more problems than before I started.
So....
Sally starts much, much easier, idles better, and comes back down to idle like she should. (That was the problem that got me started on this whole process.) I need to reset the timing but that's pretty simple, not unexpected, and should have Sally ready for the dance.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when car projects turn out this well. And each success gives me confidence for the next one.
We talked about the Kia on our drive into town this afternoon. I asked Pam if she was OK with it being gone and with the price we got for it. (That it sold in about 15 minutes suggests it was worth more than I asked.) She said yes on both counts.
We'd owned it for almost nine years, driven it 130,000 miles and both of those numbers exceed any car we've had. Neither of us was sentimentally attached to it but it does feel a bit odd not to have it out there.
If we should have asked more it's OK. The more so because the middle age couple we sold it to are also believers, were really nice, and must also be living frugally to shop Craig's List for a $2500 vehicle.
I had trouble sleeping last night and was up pretty early. I try to remember to use that extra time to pray for people the Father has put in my hear. Jon and Brenda (what a story!), Maximo's, Marecelle...
This morning I prayed the Kia would give them years of reliable service.
