"A rich man is nothing but a poor man with money." - W.C. Fields
When I went out to feed the goats this morning I saw that the feeder I repaired two days ago is broken again. One or more of them stepped up on the lower portion and snapped it right off.
I think reinforced concrete is the next step.
Pam insists on pulling Sally's door shut with the same force required to close the Blazer's door. She only rides in Sally about once a week and forgets that the door weighs half of the Blazer's and closes with a fraction of the effort. It happened again as we were leaving for church this morning. Aaargh.
In an effort to redeem myself from the blueberry pie FAIL I made an apple pie last night.
I think I'm going to give up on fancy top crusts. Some of the required steps create problems with other steps and it's just not worth it. And for some reason - did I put in too much apple filling? - this one spilled out the crust as it was baking and made a mess and a small fire on the bottom of the oven. (Some of the liquid landed on the oven element.)
I didn't have any of it last night so I'll find out this evening if it tastes good but it sure smells good.
I saw my first slug of the season yesterday, a slimy six-incher on the side of MoHo to the right of the door. The only thing more gross than seeing one is grabbing a recycle bin only to discover that a slug has crawled up into the handle.
DAMHIK
This morning at Starbucks I read an article on a car news site about Danny Thompson who just set a speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, going 450 mph in a piston-engine car. What piqued my interest is that he's the son of legendary speed record/drag racer/ off road racer Mickey Thompson who set the record at 406 mph 50 years ago. The article mentioned that Danny's father and mother had been murdered. Huh??
So I followed the Wiki trail and learned that they were shot execution style at their SoCal estate by two men who arrived and left on bicycles. They wounded Mickey then made him watch as they shot his wife to death, then finished him off. The crime went unsolved for something like 30 years and was a cold case until one person's statement opened the door to an investigation that led to more witnesses and the eventual conviction of a former business partner. He'd broken a contract, Mickey sued and won, and the guy vowed revenge. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.
The case was pushed along all those years by Mickey's sister who spent her own money to hire investigators who eventually found that initial break in the case. She was in her 70's when the sentence was finally handled down.
In the Weird Department, her son was also murdered in a drug related conflict that led to him being tossed out of a plane.
It's now been 56 days since we had any measurable precipitation. Eugene normally has 14 with days over 90 degrees and we've already had 20. Four of five days this week will add to that number and we still have half of August and all of September with their potential for HOT days.
Killer summer.
