"The flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly." William Wordsworth
Yesterday I cleaned the barn, repacked the wheel bearings on the teardrop, did a blah workout at the gym, and did some repairs to the weaning pen and the goat barn.
Goats are pretty destructive. It's not malicious, just normal goat behavior. They're curious, and lacking opposing thumbs they explore by biting things. (I think that's where the notion that goats eat anything comes from; people see them chewing on a tin can and think they're eating it.) They also like to climb and stand on anything and everything. So gates and doors, feeding racks, pretty much any structure can get beat up and broken pretty quickly. Yesterday I repaired the mineral feeder in the barn and the gate on the weaning pen. A week from now I'll move Cannoli and Donut up there. They will NOT be happy for the first 48 hours or so, and will probably be pretty vocal about that.
Oh well. It's what's gotta be.
I ran the Scandia 5k in Junction City this morning, the third year I've done that event. This was my fastest time and a full minute and a half faster than last year when I went out too slow and couldn't make up the pace.
My dream goal was 9 minute miles but that was a stretch because my training runs have been a little over 10-minute miles.
I ended up with a 9:10 pace over the 3.1 mile distance for a total of 28:28. I honestly don't think I could have cut much more than a few seconds off that time. I stayed focused and pushed the entire distance.
I finished 4th in my age division (65-69) but the prize for 3rd place was just an energy bar so it's OK.
I feel pretty good about how I did.
Next up is the Estacada 10k in six weeks. I'll start training for that Monday, adding distance to my long runs which have been 4 miles while training for this 5k. I think my goal will be to finish in under an hour.
STOP THE PRESSES! UPDATE:
I just got an email with race results and they had 10 year age divisions, not the 5 year divisions that the entry form indicated. The three guys who finished ahead of me were 64, 61, and 63. Young punks! And that means that if they had been 5 year divisions I'd have finished FIRST!! The guy in the 65-69 category who came in after me was 2 minutes back.
I feel vindicated....and cheated.
On the way home I stopped at a car show at Elmira Middle School. I was very surprised at the quality of the three dozen or so cars that were there. They had hot rods, rat rods, a few stock, and customs. I think my favorite were two late-20s Model A's, a coupe and a sedan. It makes me think that maybe I need to do one of those. You can build an entire Model A out of a catalog because of parts availability and the look is so classic. Model T's are notoriously difficult to drive but Model A's are much easier. Who doesn't smile when they see a Model A?
I washed the Blazer this afternoon. Because it's black and we live on a gravel road it gets looking dirty and dusty quickly. The bigger problem is that the two realistic options we have for parking it are both under fir trees and that means dripping sap. Nasty! and hard to get off the finish.
I think I'm going to get a 10' x 20' canopy from Harbor Freight for up by the weaning pen. With the ubiquitous H.F. 20% coupon and a $120 price tag, if it doesn't hold up for 30 years we're not taking a huge risk. And getting the sap off is hard on the finish, never mind what it does before I get it off.
Note: that's a pic I snagged off the HF site and is NOT our '97 Blazer or anything approaching the environs around MoHo. The presence of cement is a dead giveaway. I'll make sure it's anchored well and the spot where it will go is somewhat sheltered from the wind by...the big fir trees that drop sap.
Tomorrow will be in the mid-80s but the morning should be very comfortable. We're going to take Sally to church tomorrow. Summer weather, a classic Mustang, good worship.....
Yep!
