"I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn't itch." - Gilda Radner
My brain is going to explode.
This morning I met with Dave and Molly. I guess the best way to describe Dave is the senior assistant pastor, or the executive pastor, or the hyper-motivated crazy-busy guy who works behind the scenes to make University Fellowship Church a pretty impressive and very unassuming church. Molly is a full-time non-professional staff member (i.e., not ministry but perhaps more accurately clerical staff) who is in her 20's, looks like she's 13, is a newlywed, and a get-it-done data wizard. I'm gonna need Molly's help A LOT!
They have a monster database in a program called Smartsheet. It's going to take me more than a little time to learn how to use that database, but there's a ton of valuable information in there that will be key to fulfilling my job responsibilities.
We've always thought one of the things that makes UFC remarkable is that despite it's relatively large size it feels very connected. I've described it as the smallest large church I've ever encountered. I now realize one of the reasons for that is the impressive job the staff does of tracking everyone in the church (and I mean everyone) and identifying the degree to which they're integrated and growing spiritually.
I'm responsible for the 30 or so small groups that meet during the week. I'm to track each group, know who's attending them, and make sure the leaders are getting everything they need in terms of support.
I'm also charged with producing a plan that will eventually give every man in the church the opportunity to go through a prescribed discipleship program via a mentoring system. That part of my responsibilities will be a little more challenging but I'm looking forward to that. It will involve both development and implementation so I'm starting at square one. The small groups already exist and that system is in place so my role there is primarily oversight.
I had a serious issue with Sally this morning. Bad enough that 1/4 mile down Baker I turned around and took Pam's car into the church office. That meant she couldn't go to the women's Bible study which made me feel bad.
I tried to find the issue this afternoon when I got home. I discovered the dust cap had come off the left front axle and was rattling around in the hub cap, which explained part of the noise. But the very ominous sounding metal clunk that sounded like the front suspension was going to collapse disappeared as suddenly and mysteriously as it arrived.
I have NO idea.
I'll drive it to the gym tomorrow (if it feels like it won't break and run into the ditch at 50 mph) and hope it was a frozen up suspension part that has now loosened up.
Before my meeting at church I took Buddy to the nearby PetSmart for a grooming. Because we live out in the woods he gets very dirty and always has little sticks and fir needles stuck in his fur. Now it's too short and he's clean. I like his look better with the natural longer hair but this is more practical.
I'll try to learn to do it myself to save the $$ in the future. Now I know what it should look like.
Time for a cup of coffee. Then bed. Lots of work to do tomorrow to get ready for my Sunday responsibilities.
