"Silent gratitude isn't very much use to anyone." - Gertrude Stein

This is an example of what they used to detect incoming attack planes before radar. (If he heard planes he posted a message on Facebook.)

As long as we're on a vintage photography theme, here's a good site with a huge collection of vintage photography, some of it going WAY back. You can browse by decade, theme, etc. I find it interesting to look at photos of common people from earlier eras.

After a few days of wonderfully cool weather we're back into the 90's for the next several days. But at night it drops down into the uppser 60's, so with everything opened up before bed and then closed up about 10 or 11 a.m. we can avoid turning on the AC. Our highest electric bill this summer was $168. It felt like a killer, but our mid-winter heating bill in Michigan neared $300. That was in a huge 100-year old house with leaky windows and radiators, but we kept the thermostat set at 58 degrees. Getting out from under the electric blanket in the morning was the worst.
No, those middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom were worse. Stepping on the bathroom's ceramic tile floor was like walking on an ice flow.

Next time you think your 11-year old is pretty impressive given a listen to a little bit of Nathan Meltzer doing his thing.
On the way home from a meeting this evening I listened to From the Top, an NPR program that features young musicians with incredible ability. The host interviews them, they perform a piece, and then there's a brief followup conversation. I don't usually listen (Sunday night football) but every time I do I'm amazed.
I should download the podcast.

I inherited my mother's arthritis genes.
Thanks, mom.
The worst is my hands, and especially my thumbs. I'm putting the rubber weatherstripping on the VW's windows, and then the chrome "garnish strip" in the groove in the middle of that weatherstripping. Both of those tasks require hand strength I haven't had for years. I've got two windows done (rear quarters), the weather stripping on the windshield, and nothing done on the rear window.
Wish I had some fenders.
