"Nobody ever forgets where he buried the hatchet." - Kin Hubbard
That architectural salvage business was a bust, with 99% junk. We did see barrels that started life as plastic drums and have been repurposed as rain collection barrels. I may get one when the time comes to put up on a stand, fill with water out of the irrigation well (a cheap pump will do the trick) and then use gravity to provide water for the chickens.
Other than that there was nothing of interest or value. Certainly no barn wood.
The predicted rain lived up to the hype, and for brief stretches throughout the day the wind kicked up to about 30 mph. Thankfully no limbs down and MoHo didn't leak. I haven't been down to Fred or the coop, so I'll find out about them tomorrow. If I can get there from here. We're supposed to get another inch and a quarter, then 1/2" Wednesday and Thursday.
George, a coffee shop regular who's well into his 70's at least, is a good man. I like him. He's totally bald and even in the coldest weather goes without a hat. This morning he was looking very distinguished in a fedora. When I asked him about it he explained that when it rains he has to wear a hat or the rain gets in his ears and shorts out his hearing aids.
I watched the President's speech last night and afterward wondered why. Didn't seem like he said anything worth the gravitas of the setting. I wasn't surprised at the immediate criticism from the 49 Republican candidates, but I am surprised by the very loud silence of all the Democrats. So far as I've seen not a single Democratic congressman has come to his defense re. those criticisms.
Is that significant?
How come wool shrinks if you wash it, but the sheep we drove by today seem to be just fine in the rain? How come the wood doesn't shrink when it's on them?
I finally feel completely caught up to the fitness level I had when we left AZ. It's been a few days shy of two months since we arrived and I went about 5 weeks just before and just after that move without any workouts. Every time I fall out of the routine for that long getting back to pre-lapse condition feels like an impossible journey. But for the last three days I've done the prescribed workout, so while I feel like death I think I'm back.
Back to the architectural salvage place. Thinking ahead to furnishing Fred I've thought about what to do for my desk and have an idea. What about finding an old door complete with weathered, worn paint, making a couple of sawhorse-like supports out of old wood, and getting a piece of glass cut to lay across the top of it? They had one door out of dozens that would work, and it had arched panels, but it was white and I'd rather have a cool color. I also need to find out how pricey a piece of glass will be.
The other potential issue: most desks have drawers. Hmmmm. Maybe an old chest of drawers to one side.
Supper time. And Pam baked cookies this morning that are calling my name.

You need to come visit us, we could spend hours wandering through Southern Accents Architectural Antiques ( http://www.sa1969.com ) it's right in the heart of down town cullman, and it's the real deal. I love to stop in there and just imagine what I would use different items for.
Jason built our dining table out of an old door that came out of my aunts house. He used stair railing, newel posts and corbels for the base. I painted it "tuxedo black" and love I love it.
So add us to the list of "visits" in the coming year....we'd love to have you!

That would be fun! Don't know how we'd get anything home, and there's probably a similar place a bit closer, but the company would be as good as it gets.
