"Quote me as saying I was misquoted." - Groucho Marx

Yep, it's raining.

Anybody else see the story on CBS Sunday Morning about The Choir of New College? Very cool.

I talked to a guy at church this morning before the service started who is working on his Masters at UO in Sports Marketing. Fascinating! The current class has 37 students and they meet each week from one of the major sports equipment companies. The guy who was there this last week said they should expect 100 job offers here in Oregon when they graduate. The class is organized into groups, each working on a project that lasts the entire stretch of their degree program. His group is developing a women's shoe that will be both good for hiking and also for wearing in town, so she can go from her hike right to work, or shopping. He said right now all women's hiking shoes are just a case of "shrink and pink," an industry term that means, "take a men's shoe, make it smaller, and give it a more feminine appearance." His team is designing one from the ground up - he said women's feet are structurally different - and at the end of the program will meet with a venture capitalists to discuss getting it to the marketplace.

He mentioned Doc Martin as one of the firms that would be recruiting from their class. My first thought was, "I watched that show last night," and my second was, "I don't think of them as a sports equipment company." I also learned that Converse is owned by Nike.

Bengals QB Andy Dalton broke his thumb today and will see a specialist tomorrow. Maybe he'll be on Josh's patient list.

We've pretty much decided that getting a new wood burning stove at this point doesn't work from a cost/value angle. According to the factory rep at the store we'd get a 50% increase in burn efficiency, but the cost - $3,500 all in - is too high even if we have to order two more cords of wood for this season.
This cord went inside Barnette, but that makes it very tight with the truck in there. I hope to have it drivable by the end of the week, which means parking it back inside, and that means having the firewood outside. So this week I'll try to get a woodshed built. Simple shelter with a shed roof, but I may include a very small lockable room at one end for storing the chain saw and garden tools. Doesn't have to look pretty or be fancy, just secure, so it shouldn't be too tricky. Just have to figure out where to put it and then dig the post holes.

Sir Edmund Burke said, "All that's necessary for evil to conquer is for good men to do nothing."
George Bernard Shaw said, "Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it."
That's the dilemma I struggle with when a person on Facebook posts something that is clearly and inappropriately prejudicial towards Muslims.
Let it go without calling them out for it, or get in a discussion that has no chance of making a difference?
So far I've decided to shoot the middle - call them out but not engage in further exchanges on the topic.
Social media is a very mixed bag.
