"Never put a sock in a toaster." - Eddie Izzard
We got home at 7:45 last night from our trip up to Seattle to visit the folks. We left Ida Culver House about 1:00 and should have been home a little after 6:00. The visit was great, the drive home was not. We'd been on the freeway for about 2 miles when traffic locked up, and it continued that way for all of WA and the first 50 in OR. What should have been a three hour drive to Portland took four, and we were an hour south of that before I could consistently drive the speed limit. I told Pam that we won't leave the folks' place at that time of day ever again. If it means getting up at 3 a.m. to avoid a repeat I'll gladly do it.
You probably already know this, but if you load the 32 chapters of a book on CD to your iPad you should make sure it's not set to shuffle before you listen to it.
One week from today is my first gig in Puerto Rico. It's a 3-hour block (with breaks and Q&A) on leadership. I've broken it up into three sections: the heart of a leader, the skills of a leader, and the cost to a leader. That third one is clumsy from an alliterative standpoint, but I couldn't come up with a decent alternative and it doesn't really matter. We'll talk about the downsides of being in a position of leadership and how to deal with them.
If you're of a certain age you may remember the term, fragging from the Vietnam war.
Today will be a recovery day, with some putzing on various projects. While I'm in P.R. Pam will be in MI visiting her mom, so I need to get the place ready to be vacant for a week. At the top of that list is getting the truck running so it can be backed into Barnette where it will normally reside. I'd also like to get the lower level of Fred painted with Kilz so it's ready for electrical when I get back.
Today is also Pam's birthday. We've never made much of a fuss about birthdays, don't exchange gifts, and go out for a definitely-not-fancy dinner if we're feeling especially festive. I doubt we'll do that today because we just got back from Seattle, where every meal was "out."
I don't even have a birthday card for her.
One of God's great blessings in my life is a wife perfectly suited for me, including being VERY low maintenance. Mostly we just have fun together.
