"A psychiatrist asks a lot of expensive questions your wife asks for nothing." - Joey Adams

It's 7 p.m., we've just had supper, and bed might happen very, very soon.

Cory and I left their house about 8:45 to make a stop at the local prison to drop off some materials they use for Bible study with the inmates. We went from there to Kanisa la Neema (The Church of Grace) where this conference is being held. Three 90-minute sessions today and three more tomorrow. We took about a 15 minute break between sessions one and two, and had a meal some of the women cooked between sessions two and three.

At the end of that break between 1 and 2 they call people back in from outside by singing. A few people started, the sound fills the room and spills outside, and the people come in. Then they join the singing until the 70+ people are all singing together. Fantastic!

For the meal: rice, some cooked greens of some sort, and little chunks of boiled beef (gristle included). Bottled water to drink. The cooks pose with the teacher:

Cory translated for me and did a great job. We work easily together, quickly finding our rhythm, with him adding explanation when necessary. It turns out some of the words I use don't have a Swahili equivalent, or the parallel word has negative connotations. For example, I was going to talk about the disciplines of the Christian life but learned that the Swahili word for discipline is the same as the word for torture. So we changed it to ingredients and I used the analogy of a stew.

Yeah, I'm totally whooped. The next 12 hours are about recovery so I can do it again tomorrow. The organizers were very surprised at the attendance today and had to send someone to get more of the handouts printed halfway through the first session. The church leaders expect tomorrow to be better attended.

Humbling, gratifying, exhausting, fun, and more.
