"Of all the home remedies, a good wife is the best." - Kin Hubbard

You can't make this stuff up.
The co-owner (with his wife) of a local pet shop got arrested because he came out of the adult entertainment shop next door to the police station clearly under the influence of meth.
Can we pause to ask what businessman thinks it's a good idea to put a porn shop next to a police station?
While the guy is in jail the cops are alerted to evidence that leads to additional charges. It seems that before heading to the porn shop he'd hired an out of town prostitute. He paid her in cash and then tipped her with a gift, a galago he'd taken from the pet store. That's a small primate more commonly known as a bush baby. (I told you this was beyond fiction.)
The pet store's Facebook page carries a new post saying his wife is now the sole operator and her (soon to be ex-) husband will have no further connection to the business.

I spent the morning cleaning while Pam baked for tomorrow's brunch pot-luck at church. She made these little pastries about 2" square that are filled with Nutella. Meanwhile I vacuumed, mopped, and dusted. It's one of the contrasts between life in Phoenix and life in Oregon that the inside of the house gets dirty during opposite seasons. In AZ windows are open and desert dust blows in during the winter because during the five months of summer everything is closed up with the AC on. Here, last week's unseasonably high temps in advance of consistently warm weather had the same effect. To be fair, the winter rains also mean tracked in mud.

This afternoon I took my wheelbarrow across the road to the neighbors who have four beautiful Arabian horses and came back with a load of fresh manure. My compost pile is now fully stocked with enough nitrogen to keep it cooking for the next year, especially with the periodic addition of what will come out of the chicken coop. Gonna have me some really good stuff for next year's garden. (Yes, I mixed it all in after I took this pic, but I wanted you to see all this good stuff in all its glory.)

This afternoon I worked on the electrical in Fred and got all the outlets wired in. Tomorrow after church I'll wire up the lights, incl. up in the loft.
I reloaded all the mouse traps yesterday but didn't catch anything. I'm assuming the carpenter ant bait I put out is doing its job. I cleaned up all the "sawdust" and will watch to see if I get any more.

On the way home from the hardware store this afternoon I was thinking about the last seven months.

  • We sold our house in AZ for more than our listing price to a cash offer.
  • We moved to a beautiful, wooded, 3-acre parcel outside of Elmira, OR
  • We've now got a chicken coop inhabited by seven pullets, a vegetable garden, Marion berries, blueberries, and an apple tree.
  • Fred is pretty close to being the perfect office/guest house.
  • MoHo still looks like a white trash single wide from the outside, but inside it's bright, pleasant, and cozy.
  • There's a nice gravel circular drive.
  • I've been to Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and Tanzania on teaching trips that were both fascinating and very gratifying opportunities to serve the national churches in those three locales.
  • We've also been to AZ to visit the kids & grandkids and to Seattle to visit my folks.
