"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Snore, and you sleep alone." - Anthony Burgess
I was up early enough to watch all of the men's marathon coverage on NBC. I don't think the majority of people have any idea how impressive those guys are, mostly because it doesn't look like they're working that hard. They are! They run 26.2 miles at a pace of around 5 minutes per mile. The world record for a mile is about 3:50. Forty years ago, when I was at what I consider my peak, the three of us who ran together daily decided we wanted to see how fast we could run a mile and our goal was one sub-5 mile, and these guys go at about that pace for 26 miles! Now, on my track days my goal is to get as close as I can to an 8-minute mile.
Anyone who finishes a marathon has accomplished a significant victory over body and mind. To do it at that pace is beyond impressive. These guys are freaks. I did two marathons way back when and was thrilled to finish under 5 hours. Today's winning time was just over two.
(And that an American - from Portland! - finished third is a huge deal in a race full of Kenyans, Ethhiopians, Sundanese...never mind that it was only the second time he'd run a marathon.)
Today has been wonderful, with temps not getting out of the 80's. When it's in the 90's here, or into the triple digits as we were this last week, it is NOT a dry heat.
First, Hillary gave us "My brain short circuited," and now Lochte provides, "I over exaggerated."
Isn't it nice to have new substitutes for, "I lied"?
I worked again this morning cutting logs and hauling them via wheelbarrow up to where I'll park the splitter I'll rent. That's hard work! But the cooler temps were a lot better.
Who needs CrossFit when there's firewood to set up? By the time I get the rest of the logs cut into rounds, all those rounds up to MoHo, split, and stacked I'm going to look like one of those Olympic athletes.
Friend Sue posted a link to a BBC site where you enter your age, height, weight, and country, and it tells you your BMI and what country has that as their average BMI. So I bit on the tease and discovered I'm even skinnier than the average North Korean. The good news: I've got the Ethiopians in my rear view mirror.
Surprisingly, Americans aren't at the top. Several Pacific Islander nations are higher, as are Croatia and Argentina.
It's Sunday afternoon, so we're off soon for our normal. First, a stop at the Starbucks in Fred Meyer to use their WiFi to watch any videos we've bookmarked (Pam always has a list), and then to church. I offered to be there at 3:00 for setup but the pastor sent me an email saying they have that covered this week. But he'd like me to help with greeting people at 5:40.
That's a little weird since almost nobody has said anything to us in the two months we've been going there. So now I can say, "Good evening. My name is Craig and I'm the guy you've never said 'hello' to."

Meb finished in the top 20 of the marathon despite 7 bathroom stops. I couldn't complete 7 bathroom stops in the time it took them to complete the marathon
