"Public opinion is no more than this: what people think that other people think." - Alfred Austin
Most conversation about the weather is much ado about nothing, but in this case the weather here is truly noteworthy. Yesterday's ice storm got worse instead of better overnight such that my dr.'s office called at 6 a.m. to tell me my 9:20 appointment was cancelled because of the bad roads. Staff couldn't get in. Ice has continued to build up all day and trees have continued to come down. Pam left an hour ago to do grocery shopping because we'd read that Hwy 126 into town was OK. She sent me a message 15 minutes later that she was stopped behind semi on 126, going nowhere. Turns out four trees came down across the road.
I went out 30 minutes ago to check on things around here, including the chickens (they're fine) and found the tree across the creek I heard come down about 3 a.m. It was a fairly small alder. During the 15 minutes I was out there I heard two large trees up the hill come crashing down. The branches of all our fir trees are weighed down by the ice which, yes, has me a bit nervous. Any number of them could lay right through MoHo if they came down. It's noon tomorrow before we'll be above freezing.
It was 49 degrees inside MoHo when I got up so lighting a fire was the first thing on the agenda. I've kept the wood stove stoked since then and we've stayed right at 69-71 degrees. I'm getting the hang of this, but boy, we're sure going through the wood!
I'm bored silly stuck inside. Worked on my book, including some proof reading.
While reading about the New Jerusalem I spent time in Isa. 62:4 where the name Hephzibah is used. It means cherished, or highly valued. Too bad it's so awkward, because otherwise it would be a good name for a baby girl.
Tomorrow is Beethoven's birthday. What should we do to celebrate?
We could have a 5th.
I watched Sect. of State John Kerry's press conference in which he talked about what's going on in Aleppo. Infuriating! What in the world is the point in condemning Assad and the Russians "in the strongest possible way" if it's just words. It's an insult to the Syrians and makes a mockery of our nation when we speak loudly and carry no stick. Assad and Putin must do nothing more than a giant shrug when they hear what he said.
I started this post early afternoon and things have gotten worse. Thousands without power, downed trees blocking roads all over the place, and no sign of above freezing temps for the next two days. That means trees and wired weighed down with ice will stay that way, with more of each sure to come down.
I'm thankful we've got a wood stove, a generator, and in a worst case scenario a stream running very high. (No power means no water when you're on a well.)
Last night we watched our recorded episode (#1 I think) of "The Hollow Crown," the current Sunday night Masterpiece Classic. I think it's a dramatization of a Shakespeare play, but I know almost nothing about the bard. At first it was hard to follow - the dialogue was in that old English - but it got pretty good. We're looking forward to the next episode.
The Seahawk's uniforms give me a headache, but we'll stick with the game for awhile. Just put a fresh piece of wood on the fire so we'll stay warm for another hour.
