"There are many men of principle in both parties in America, But there is no party of principle." - Alexis de Tocqueville

I read an article yesterday about the extremely high rate of a very rare genetic defect occurring in the FLDS community. Inbreeding. In the process of reading I came across a word I thought was just a typo, but it showed up several more times.
Polygamy is having more than one spouse. That I knew.
Polygyny is having more than one wife. New to me.
Polyandry is having more than one husband. I'd heard that word but didn't know what it meant.

The article included stats on how quickly one man's number of descendants increases when he has multiple wives with whom he has children. They figure one in 20 people in China is a descendant of Genghis Khan because of his tactic of sleeping with the wives of conquered foes.

Q: If someone who practices polygamy is a polygamist what term describes a man who marries more than one woman?
A: Idiot

The agenda here has been dominated by installing new hinges on Sally's driver side door. I started yesterday morning and still am not done. The door came off easily enough but the correct way to do this job is to remove the fender for better access to the body side of the two hinges. Could NOT get it to come off first because of bolts I couldn't find holding it in place, and then because the bent bumper has it pinched in place.
So I tried to get the hinges and door aligned with the fender on and after two hours of struggling with that step I had to walk away. By 3 p.m. it was too hot in the full sun and I was too frustrated. No good was going to come of continuing.
I posted my problems on the Mustang forum, got one particularly helpful suggestion in response, and after an hour this morning had the door aligned properly so that it now opens and closes just like it should.
As I type this I still have to reinstall most of the fender bolts, but a couple of other projects need to get done today. Those bolts can wait until tomorrow if necessary.
Two of the fender bolts are behind the headlight (huh??). When I took the trim ring off the headlight all the bits and pieces that hold it in place and get it aimed correctly fell out in a pile on the ground. Turns out the trim ring was the only thing holding it in place.
I've ordered a new hardware kit, and I'm hoping the other side will show me how it all goes together. If that one is a mess too....????

I was so excited to finally get that door aligned (I was very frustrated after 5 hours yesterday) that I did my happy dance and then extra distance on my run. Went 4 miles, my longest since last year.

Before leaving I did my Friday weigh-in for the kids who were each up less than 2 lbs. since last week. I sent Marta a message and she responded that they're in between, so this is normal. They're transitioning from Sundae's udder to solid feed, nibbling on alfalfa during the day.
The big news: I weighed Itzhak and he came in at 94 lbs! That's 20 more than I would have guessed and more than Marta thought, too. His date with destiny is set for the second week in Sept. when Pam's in Phoenix and I was hoping he'd be at 100 lbs. by then. That won't be a problem!

In doing some research for the current section of my writing project I did some reading on the terms American exceptionalism, nationalism, and patriotism. I was surprised to learn that the first person to use the term American exceptionalism was Joseph Stalin, who, when criticizing the American Communist Party, referred to the "heresy of American exceptionalism."
I *think* it's accurate to say those three terms are on a continuum, with nationalism mid-way between the other two.
And I'm pretty sure American exceptionalism is inconsistent with thoughtful dispensationalism, patriotism is a good thing, and nationalism is, in most cases, problematic. The exception might be colonies or ethnic regions seeking independence.

Nationalism, a sense of national consciousness and strong loyalty to one's country or ethnic group, is both natural and dangerous. I wonder if it isn't a natural consequence of God's action after the incident at Babel. That is, it's part of the judgment that divides people lest they repeat that act of disobedience.
Hmmmm.
