"The story of a mother's life: trapped between a scream and a hug." - Cathy Guisewite
Several of the headlines about the woman who did the shooting at the You Tube headquarters point out that women rarely do these kinds of things.
Remember when women rarely swore in public speech? Or told sexual jokes? Or got in fights? Those are not unusual behaviors today.
I'll let you speculate on what happened and if women doing mass shootings will also become more common.
I slept until 7:00 this morning. I haven't done that since the last time I was on pain meds. The difference - then I felt no pain and now I do! Between my work here on Baker Rd. and starting back at the gym my body is screaming.
I was a teen in the late 60's when the civil rights movement was heating up and when Dr. Martin Luther King was killed. I confess I was naive, uninformed, and blind to the discrimination that Blacks suffered and I bought into the Us vs. Them mentality that characterized much of the White population. Dr. King was a troublemaker, inciting civil unrest, and in the midst of the cold war was at least suspect in his loyalty to the United States.
I was very, very wrong.
He was the right man at the right time and we are a better country because of his work.
Google's search page doodle today honors Maya Angelou on her 90th birthday. It would have been interesting to listen in on the discussions to choose her birthday instead of MLK's death anniversary.
As soon as something like the You Tube shooting or a natural disaster happens - something bad that negatively affects a number of people - a lot of energy is put into finding out who is at fault. It's assumed that if someone had done their job - police, govt. officials, some segment of the business community - this wouldn't have happened.
I don't understand where that comes from.
Bad stuff has always happened. Why does it have to be someone's fault, that somebody messed up? Wouldn't it be better to spend that energy on fixing things?
A weather alert has been issued for Friday night and Saturday for rain and high winds. They're predicting 25 mph with gusts above that. Or, as they say in Eastport, "There'll be a light breeze."
We sometimes listen to the music channels on our Dish TV. When Pam's gone I listen to the Met Opera channel, or what she refers to as "screaming women."
And I turn the volume way up.
It is amazing what those singers, male and female, can do with their voices.
At 7:45 there's serious doubt I'll make it to 8:30 before falling asleep for the night. I got a lot done today, working hard because we're supposed to have rain through Sunday. I've also been trying to get back into a routine at the gym with a body that has done nothing but run for too many months. The rest of my body has gone to seed and is letting me know it objects to this sudden assault. Ouch.
They're calling for intermittent rain tomorrow before the downpours of the rest of the week so I might try to work on the walkways between showers. Otherwise I'll start on the bathroom electrical. Or I might just sit in my chair, drink coffee and eat cookies all day.
