We had a good morning at Pathway Bible Church. At least the preacher thinks so. Sure, it's Sunday night so he's thinking back to things he could have done better. But we worshiped and spent time listening to God speak to us in Gen. 18-19.Good people, these.
Tomorrow evening our just-formed executive committee will meet and begin working through some of the logisitcal issues involved in a new church. We're making progress, including welcoming some new people to our community of believers.
They call them drop houses here. A human smuggler, called a coyote, brings a group of illegal immigrants from south of the border and sets them up in a house until he can move them, a few at a time, out into the streets.
They busted a drop house here in the City of Avondale, a suburb in the west valley, that held 80 illegals. That's one of the largest groups they've found in one house.
Again, this whole immigration issue is complex, and one of the complexities is the presence of coyotes. They charge outrageous fees to people with very little money, too often leave them stranded in the desert or crammed into a drop house, and frequently demand more money once they're here.
It's easy to characterize illegal immigrants as bad people looking to break our laws, but, IMHO, many are doing what we would do in similar situations: anything we could to provide food and clothing for our families. The coyotes, on the other hand....
Did you see the report released a week ago by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life? Fascinating. One of the findings is that the Roman Catholic Church is losing members at a very rapid rate. The influx into the U.S. of Latinos is keeping them at steady numbers, but Anglo members are leaving at an alarming rate. I saw the first indication on TV tonight that they're trying to stem the flow. It was an ad that directed you to a web site called Catholics Come Home. Two links on the web site caught my attention. The first was the tab for donating; old habits die hard (pun intended). The other was a tab labeled "Marriage Issues." Looking that page over made it clear that the Church realizes its view on marriage & divorce is responsible for a large number of those who have left. This page tells you about how to get an annulment. Problem solved. Unless compromise for the sake of numbers is an issue.
James says, "You have not because you ask not." (James 4:2). As I've grown older - both in years and in spiritual maturity - I've determined to do my best to avoid that cause & effect dynamic. I've grown much bolder in my prayers, including over things like tax bills.
I'm working tomorrow morning fixing a leaky toilet in one of the rentals. Tuesday I'm working at the condo complex, and may have another day or two of work there. The neighbor stopped by this afternoon and has some plumbing and electrical work he wants done, and once he gets the paint I'll be doing two bedrooms, two bathrooms and the kitchen.
Oh yeah, the lady for whom I installed the vinyl flooring wants me to call her and arrange a time to do several other rooms.
'tank you, Fadder.
I went to the driving range this afternoon. It's starting to come together. I actually hit the big stick fairly well. Still not much distance, but as long as it's heading down the middle I'm happy. It's those blasts onto the next fairway that add up the strokes.
Maybe later this week I'm going to try 9 holes on the par-3 course nearby. Nothing like real world golf to bring the reality check.
United Airlines is going to start charging $25 for extra baggage. So if you grew up in a dysfunctional home or got beat up as a kid you might want to stick to Continental.
Ziplock bags are male. They hold everything in and you can see right through them.
A computer is female. Even your smallest mistakes are forever stored in memory.
