"Drive in banks were established so most of the cars today could see their real owners." - E. Joseph Cossman
The morning was spent on the curriculum. The Teacher’s Guide is finished except for some small additions to the Introduction. Tomorrow I’ll start on the Power Point presentations for each of the 23 lessons.
I also spent an hour or so working on a front page in iWeb, the web design software that comes already loaded on a Mac. I was one of those PC users who took offense at the snobbery of Mac crusaders. So at the risk of sounding like one of the zealots, the more I use this machine the more I like it. The software is much more intuitive that what I used on a PC. And because virtually all the software I need or will ever use is an Apple product it all works the same. The same commands I use in Pages, Mac’s publishing program, are also used in iWeb, whether it’s word processing, working with images or general layout. I’ve had this iBook for six or eight months and I sure wouldn’t want to go back to a PC. I agree that the initial outlay is significantly higher, but because so much software comes already loaded and the rest is stupid cheap, back end costs are much lower.
Early this morning I watched Mike & Mike in the Morning on ESPN2. Their show started out on the radio and is still broadcast there, but they also televise it. Like every other sports show in the U.S. they’re broadcasting from Miami, the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl. One of their guests this morning was Kurt Warner. That guy is sure good. I won’t be at all surprised if he gets a job in broadcasting somewhere. He’s articulate, he gets right to the point and he’s pleasant. Even with your eyes closed you can tell most of the time he’s talking with a smile on his face.
After Kurt they had the roly-polly Black guy who stars in the Bud Light commercials, the guy who goes into the sky box and takes away their Bud Light because it’s for people who actually watch the game, the people down in the real seats.
What a kick! He is in real life exactly what he is in those commercials except funnier. Total type casting. In fact, he was raised in Texas and had only been in CA for a short time when he got this gig. He’s no actor; just a working class guy who relates to working class people. He talks a mile a minute and is very quick witted. He had Mike & Mike in stitches.
He’s in Miami because of the Super Bowl, representing Bud Light. But he explained that we won’t see any Bud Light ads during the game. Instead, the company decided to spend that money on creating ads for entrepreneurs who have started up small businesses - blue collar people trying to make it in the world.
One of the ads will be for a barber shop in CA that’s close to a military base (don’t remember where). The barber gives a free haircut to every service person just before they leave for overseas duty, and a free haircut when they get back. His way of showing his support for them. Bud Light created an ad for this guy and spent the money to air it during the Super Bowl!
I’m not a beer drinker. I don’t like the yeast smell (or whatever it is) so I never tried tasting the stuff. But if I were a beer drinker this is the kind of thing that would get me to drink Bud Light. Yes, the cynic will say, this strategy is generating buzz for their product. But a barber out in CA is getting an ad during the Super Bowl, and that’s cool.
Unless you’re one of his competitors.
The Oscar nominations came out today and I heard a discussion of the Academy’s choices on NPR as I was driving into town tonight. There seems to be general agreement that Sandra Bullock won’t win Best Actress and Blind Side won’t win Best Picture; those two nominations are a token nod to the movie’s populist appeal. One “expert” said he couldn’t believe Bullock could garner a nomination for two hours of being annoying. And the movie had no serious message. It was just empty feel-good and formulaic cinema.
Well excuse me!
Somebody better not be drinking Bud Light or he should expect it to be confiscated.

One of those commercials will be local phx guitar store owner. The news did a 'thing' on him the other night. They just picked him out of the blue and he had a whirlwind trip with lots of coverage and publicity. Pretty cool story.
Isn't it Miller Lite?
Yes, it is Miller Lite. Oops! Told you I wasn't a beer drinker. Apologies to the delivery man.
