Google before you Tweet is the modern think before you speak.
Some things are the same the world over:
Cheap flights in Ireland
I listened to NPR while I worked today. Interesting coverage of their own dirty laundry. I heard some of their commentators arguing that the Federal funding they receive is so minimal compared to the size of the deficit that cutting it would be inconsequential to the govt. but devastating to NPR. Which made me think about what the financial experts tell families with money problems to do. Cut out ALL nonessential costs. That Netflix fee of $10 per month? Eliminate it! No, it won't make the difference between paying your mortgage or losing your home, but cut it anyway! That savings, plus the magazine subscriptions, plus...might make the difference between paying the electric bill and getting your service cut off.
They said cutting funding won't hurt the big stations like WGBH in Boston, but the small market stations out in Nebraska will get slammed.
Except they can listen to WGBH online. You can listen to any number of stations, NPR or otherwise, online.
But a dairy farmer in rural Wisconsin, they countered, might not have high speed internet available in his/her area.
OK, so we're morally obligated to fund a radio station because Bruce, WI doesn't have the internet and can't get NPR?
Sorry, I have been an NPR listener for years - decades - but I can't make federal funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting work.
Through pure subterfuge I caught eight of 10 mosquito fish. They're now swimming in a 5-gallon bucket while I prepare their remodeled home. The water is out...well, most of it...and there's 200 pounds of sand in the bottom. Tomorrow I'll put in 180 pounds of quick-set cement, let it cure for 24 hours and then paint it with Dry-Lock. I'm also going to put in a liner of black plastic sheeting as a fail-safe. Refill and restock.
In the "learn something new every day" department, apparently wheelbarrow tires aren't supposed to be inflated at 32 psi. Either that, or don't leave the wheelbarrow in the sun while you go in for lunch.
KABOOM!
Sunday's sermon is written and the slides are done.
I am a linear thinker. I don't get mosaic thinkers - just don't get 'em.
Which is why I preach propositional sermons. It's built into my DNA.
And why I'm going over and over Sundays narrative sermon.
And over and over.

I loved that feckin song.
It's only 15% of NPR's income. I think they'll survive. I know of plenty other non-profits which have thrived for decades without federal funding.
