"A portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth." - John Singer Sargent
Note: I have no idea what the quote above this pic means but he's one of my favorite artists so I figured it must say something good. And my favorite Sargent portrait is "Lady Agnew."
Did you know you can get your taxes done at Walmart?
You can also get brain surgery done at Chico's Used Tires but I wouldn't recommend it.
The "2" button on our remote died. DirectTV is sending us another one (I didn't ask, but I'm assuming they send the whole remote, not just the button).
There's an hour of my life I'll never get back again.
A news story on the CBS site reports that an increasing number of restaurants are doing away with tipping, telling their customers they don't want them to leave the waitstaff anything extra. One of the reasons cited is the inherent unfairness of tipping, with savvy staff learning the subtle ways to increase their tips. This, in turn, breeds ill will between the waitstaff.
I like this trend. Among other things, I'm bad at math. And I dislike the presumption that I should leave a tip regardless of the service. It's not a bonus, it's an expectation.
In a little bit I'm meeting Pam at Barrow's for our weekly dinner date. They serve a pretty decent paleo pizza and it's an easy place; order at the counter, sit where you want, fill your own drink glass, and don't get bugged by a waiter every five minutes asking if everything is OK.
But Barrows has joined a group of this restaurant type that has a line on the debit slip I sign for leaving a tip.
Why?
First, they haven't done anything yet except take my order. And given that the only other thing they'll do is bring the pizza to our table, what exactly is the tip for? But I feel like a real jerk for leaving it blank.
That's not enough to get me to write in a tip, but it is annoying. Feels manipulative.
Kathleen Sebelius is resigning as HHS Sect. I'm no fan of Obamacare - the health care system is a mess but I rarely find that the govt. does anything better - but you gotta feel for the lady. She earned whatever they were paying her and then some.
At our elder meeting last night we worked through some of the logistic issues for our outdoor Easter service. We've done a lot to publicize it in the large subdivision that surrounds the elementary school where we meet but have no idea if that will bring a dozen or a hundred. This is the first year we've done it this way. Could be an interesting morning.

Sargent's quote reflects the typical artist who believes that nobody is ever able to paint mouths correctly.
The tip line on the Barrow's receipt is to give you the opportunity to assure the 'chef' doesn't spit on your pizza before it goes into the oven and then to your table.
I was researching a tenant in a project we are appraising and found an interesting thread re: pizza delivery drivers. This tenant, who owns most of a certain chain of pizza and wing restaurants in AZ, had recent cut driver's pay from $7 an hour to the state minimum for tipped based workers (I think $3.50?). Drivers were upset because the restaurant continued to collect the full $3.00 delivery charge, providing them only 10% of each fee. I always assumed I was double tipping the driver between the fee and what I gave him out of guilt at the door. I asked the delivery guy 2 weeks ago - he confirmed what I read. Also, I think the tip line appears on the receipt because it is the same system they use for generating receipts for delivered pizzas. The front counter ladies at Barr's have just capitalized on a way to increase their income by asking how your day was the second before they hand you the receipt to sign.
