I'm pretty sure I talked to the guy in the middle row wearing the red shirt.
Mitzvah (n): A precept or commandment; a good deed done from religious duty.
"If it can be done anonymously but isn't, the deed does not qualify as a mitzvah." - Rabbi Craig ben Norman
It was 35 degrees when I left on my run at 9 a.m., with the sun just beginning to show through the trees. I'm learning how to dress to the weather and got it right this morning. Good run.
Are you watching the A&E series on Scientology? It's something between an expose' and a documentary on the cult's tactics done by a famous actress I don't know (surprising, eh?) who came out of the group a few years ago. Pretty damning stuff, and she's getting blasted by that "church" for what she's saying. So far there have been three hour-long installments; I don't know how many more there will be.
I admit to being skeptical about Rex Tillerson as Sect. of State, but the fact he has the support of Condoleezza Rice and Bill Gates says something about him. Those are two heavyweights in the area of international relations.
There's a program on CBS Saturday mornings called, "Henry Ford's Innovation Nation" that's all about cool stuff in the realm of inventions past or present. This last Saturday they did a segment on Doobs. These are very, very cool. One of the show's hosts went through the process which is impressive, and the outcome rates a 10 on the scale of technology put to good use. If I had the money I would get our kids & grandkids into one of these centers right now. As cool as it is to have a great family pic, how much better to have a near perfect 3D model?
(I miss my kids a lot.)
The Nutcracker is being performed everywhere this time of year, and having seen the very good production done by the West Michigan Youth Ballet I can tell you it's worth seeing.
A week ago I heard the local classical music radio station host, who is very good, introduce a piece from Swan Lake. That led me to read up on it when I got home. I had no idea! Now that I've learned about that ballet I want to go see it performed. Alas, the Elmira Ballet Company doesn't have it on their schedule.
Truth be told, the combined communities of Elmira and Veneta, with a population of about 7,000, doesn't have a ballet company. Hey, the one library is only open three days a week, partly because all six books have already been completely colored. There's a community page on Facebook that's something between hilarious and depressing, with posts warning about dead deer on the road, wondering why all the cops are at BiMart, and what that loud bang was at 2 a.m. Mix in some horrendous grammar and spelling (People, please. The past tense of I saw is not I seen) and there's no doubt this is rural living.
Another peak behind the curtain:
I used to tell my pastoral students that if you want to draw out a guy ask to him about his work, or stuff that he does.
If you want to engage a woman in conversation ask her about her family - husband, kids, or any other relationship(s).
It's so automatic I almost feel guilty for using that trick of the trade. Works almost every time.
One of today's tasks was to get Pam signed up for a Part G Medicare supplement and an Rx plan through Humana. I literally dozed off while on endless hold with Humana. They've got one of those endless loops that has fuzzy music in the background and a recorded voice telling you things you don't care about at. all. In other words, noise perfect for falling asleep.
No goats yet, but she sent us a message that one of the does (of the three that should give birth in the next few days) refused feed this morning and is on kidding watch.
