"I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us, cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals." - Winston Churchill
I heard Terry Gross interview James Burton on her NPR program, "Fresh Air." I'd never heard of the guy but he played guitar back in the day for Elvis, Ricky Nelson, John Denver, and a whole bunch of other famous musicians.
Terry asked him if he read music.
"Not enough to hurt my guitar playing."
Great line!
They're repaving west 11th, one of the major E/W thoroughfares through Eugene and the street we take almost every day. It desperately needs it so everybody is mostly OK with the traffic jam it has caused. As they move eastward they create openings to get to all the businesses along the afffected stretch, which is nice because I need to get into the Starbucks where I meet with two of my mentees. Getting out is not so easy. Today I got stuck in the parking lot of a body shop and had to back out. I put the window down to apologize to one of the employees and got a "no problem" response.
I asked how much longer this was going to continue. He told me they poured the concrete too high so that sub-contractor has to come back to remove everything he put in and repour it. That's going to add another month to the chaos.
There went that sub-contractor's profit margin.
Oops. It's now Wednesday morning. Molly and Josh left a little after 9:00 and I was in bed shortly thereafter. I offered to do the dishes in the morning but Pam stayed up to do them. The barria was good and I think they liked it, too.
Last Friday I ordered the parts I need to finish up Sally. Normally they would come out of NPD's California warehouse but these are apparently only in stock in the Michigan location, which means UPS isn't scheduled to deliver them until sometime next Monday. Booo!
Pam flies out tomorrow morning for AZ and her annual fall visit with the kids and grands. She'll be gone for 10 days. (Booo!) I'll be busy with the fall startup of the ministries I'm responsible for. The first 4-week course of my Continuing Ed class will begin next Thursday night, small groups start up next week with a leader's meeting Sunday, and we're wrapping up this year's edition of Bible Project with a new group scheduled to begin the first week of October.
Lots of prep to do. But I'm wrapping up several projects here on Baker Rd., including Sally, so I'll have more time for study and prep.
I'm also trying to spend an hour or so each day on Portuguese. So far it's going well, but this is the easy stage - just learning vocabulary and putting together simple sentences. I can see that the stage is coming where a more intense and focused effort will be required. Hopefully I'll be far enough into it that motivation won't be a problem. And I'm enjoying this so far.
OK, I'm off to work.
